There is only so much you can do without a multimeter. with a multi meter you can see the voltage while running, furthermore you can take a jumper wire and full field the alternator, basically give full charging capacity command and see if your voltage fluctuates.
Use 13mm socket on long extemsion and remove the 2 battery hold down nuts. Remove battery hold down plate and vent hose. Pull battery back and remove (+) terminal reaching under the seat. Lift out battery, you will need to tilt but is sealed. Reverse steps to reinstall, fill open vent hole in (+) side.

It won't hurt the battery to drain it 50% or so before recharging, and if you can fit a group 31 in there, you can probably drain it 30-40% and still start the Jeep easily. C.
